Lent and Easter 2019

The English word 'Lent' means 'Spring', but this doesn't express the significance of the six-week period of spiritual discipline before Easter.  It is believed that its origin lies in the formal and final period of preparation of candidates for baptism at Easter. It later became transformed into a period of general devotional preparation for Easter for all.

Lent covers the period from Ash Wednesday to Easter Eve, of
which the 40 days (not including Sundays) are devoted to fasting and penitence in commemoration of Christ's fasting in the wilderness. Today, very few people actually fast for this period, although different people respond to the opportunity at different levels.

Fasting is the act of willingly abstaining from some or all food and/or drink, for a period of time. Some people go without their favourite, or some treat for the period, and the money saved is given to a good cause.  Today, more and more people are choosing to do things instead of give up things, e.g. follow a regular pattern of bible readings from the temptations up to Easter, visit people known to be lonely, volunteer for a charity.

Whatever you decide to do, make it purposeful – read a book, read the Bible, do something you’ve been meaning to do – something that will help you in your life or help others in theirs. Is there something you take for granted in your life – something that others are dying for – clean water, shelter, warmth, food?? Find out how you could support some of the charities working with these people.

However you choose to make use of Lent, I hope that through it you will meet the living Christ as you seek to follow him on the 'Way of the Cross'. Make Lent a positive time, but also a meaningful time as we walk the way of the cross with our Lord.
